International Labour Day (1 May) is celebrated every year to celebrate the contribution of the working class to society On this day let's discuss an important issue ie. Working hours.
The Modi government is looking to implement new labor laws from 1 July 2022. The working hours of employees may increase from 8 - 9 hours to 12 hours (4 days a week,3 days off), increase in basic salary leading to increase in P.F. deduction limit& less in-hand salary so what can be thePros&Cons if this decision comes into practice.
ADVANTAGES OF LONG WORKING HOURS
1)Increase in productivity of employees& higher level of concentration.
2 ) Some employees get paid on an hourly basis thus working12 hours a day will be a monetary gain.
3) With one more day off employees can use this spare time to learn a new skill which may, in turn, lead to personal&professional growth.
4) Reduction in maintenance costs for the employer.
5) This is an environment-friendly approach because 3 days off means less use of petrol & diesel no use of water& electric appliances in offices throughout the country for 3 days a week which will result in a reduction in pollution levels.
DISADVANTAGE OF 4 DAY WORK WEEK
1) If you are married with teens or toddlers at home then 4 day work week will be emotionally draining because when you will leave early morning to catch the metro your child will either be sleeping or request you to drop him to school, then how difficult it will be for you to choose one between two difficult responsibilities, then at night same situation will get repeated either you are mentally drained after 12 hours work or the child is asleep than what about the much-needed quality time.
2) Health problems like stress, anxiety, obesity, &heart disease will come as a gift hamper with long working hours.
3) In India people live with old aged parents, if both husband & wife are working, it becomes difficult for parents to manage alone in 8 hours schedule but a 12hour schedule will make the situation worst.
To conclude we can say that Long working hours can give you career opportunities but your body won't thank you, So the only solution to this problem
is to stick to a 5day week& focus on the quality of work& let the employees decide in how many hours they can achieve the target keeping other things in mind
